Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, Cuenca, Ecuador
Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception is a Roman Catholic Cathedral located in front of Parque Abdón Calderón in the city of Cuenca, Ecuador. The construction of the cathedral also known as the New Cathedral began in 1885 and was completed in 1974. Its towers are truncated because of a miscalculation of the German architect Padre Johannes Baptista Stiehle who designed Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception to be the largest cathedral in South America. However, the front tower domes could not be built because of the fear that cathedral would collapse under its weight. Despite architect's mistake the New Cathedral with its distinctive blue and white domes became the symbol of the city of Cuenca.
