Picture of Lima Cathedral, Peru
Lima Cathedral is a Roman Catholic Cathedral located in the Main Plaza in the city of Lima, Peru. The foundation stone was laid by Spanish conquistador Francisco Pizarro in 1534 but the construction works of the cathedral began in 1594 and lasted until 1625 when it was also consecrated.

The cathedral was hit by many earthquakes especially severe in 1746 and 1940. Although it was damaged and rebuilt several times the cathedral preserved its colonial style and facade.

Lima Cathedral is also known for its beautiful interior. The main highlight of the cathedral is probably the mosaic-covered chapel which contains the coffin with remains of Francisco Pizarro who was buried in Lima Cathedral after his assassination in 1541.
