Church of St Mary of Vllaherna, Berat, Albania
The Church of St Mary of Vllaherna is an Orthodox church located inside the a fortress on a rocky hill on the left bank of the river Osum in Berat, Albania. The church was built in 13th century and is one of the finest examples of Byzantine architecture in Albania.Interior of the church houses 16th century mural paintings by Nikolla who is the son of the most outstanding medieval Albanian painter, Onufri. The Church of St Mary of Vllaherna was rebuilt in 1797 on the foundations of the original church and is considered a national monument.
Church of St. John the Theologian – Kaneo, Macedonia
The Church of St John the Theologian - Kaneo or the Church of St John at Kaneo is an Orthodox church located on Kaneo overlooking Lake Ohrid in the city of Ohrid, Republic of Macedonia. It remains unknown when the Church of St John at Kaneo was built but according to the church's documents it was constructed before 1447. The architect of the cruciform shaped church is also unknown but the constructor was definitely a master of Byzantine and Armenian architecture. The Church of St John at Kaneo is dedicated to the author of the Gospel of John, John the Theologian.The spiritual life and the church itself declined after the arrival of the Turks on the Balkans. The structure and frescoes of the church were reconstructed at the end of 19th century. New wooden iconostasis was constructed by the 20th century. On the apse were portrayed several saints and Virgin Mary. The additions from the 19th century were removed during the restoration works in 1963 and 1964, while the original frescoes restored: portrait of Christ the Pantocrator surrounded by eight flying angels, the scene of "The Communion", portraits of the Prophets, portrait of St. Clement of Ohrid, Erasmus of Lychnidos, portrait of Constantine Cavassila and the frescoes of St John the Theologian.
