Church of St. George, Lalibela, Ethiopia

Church of St George of Lalibela is one of the 11 rock-cut churches at Lalibela located in the small town of Lalibela, Amhara Region, Ethiopia. The rock-cut churches were built on orders of Ethiopian King Gebre Meqel Lalibela who ruled from 1189 to 1229 and wanted to built a New Jerusalem. All 11 rock-cut churches are inscribed in the UNESCO World Heritage sites and are considered the Eight World Wonder by many people.

Church of St George of Lalibela is the most famous and the most magnificent of the 11 rock-cut churches at Lalibela. The monolithic church was cut out of solid red volcanic rock with the roof in a shape of a Greek cross.
